After the #SpecialTask debacle the previous year, the event organizers took big steps to ensure it didn’t happen again. Dedicated marshals would spend their time on the event doing a recce and prepping the task sites for the Cameleers.

#Turkey not only participated for the first time this year, but they went on to win the overall event. Jim Benson and Marc Day of Team UK won the #TeamSpirit. Marc Day would come back to the 🐪🏆 the following years to acting Lead Scout for the convoy.

The third, and final, appearance of the #RangeRoverClassic in the 🐪🏆 was for this event. The convoy of cameleers and support vehicles made the first continuous, north-south traverse in the country’s history, from Diego Suarez to Fort Dauphin. .
The lack of rules and recces, coupled with on the spot planning were a disaster for the #SpecialTasks. This led to a near mutiny among the teams, with the US and U.K. being the only ones trying to stay out of it.

The win should have gone to Team USA members Tom Collins and @donald_roy_ but in the end the award went to the Italian team. But out of this mess came the realization for the need to have professional planner take care of the scoring, rules and planning of the tasks.

Over 13 days, the convoy made good time on their journey from #Cooktown to #Darwin. Though they averaged about 155 miles (250km) per day, there was one particular river crossing that took upwards of 24 hours to cross. Of course that was done in typical 🐪🏆 style, with the construction and use of rafts!

The teams were driving #LandRover 90’s and the support crew drove the 110’s. The #TeamSpirit award went to the #Aussie team of Glenn Jones and Ron Begg. .

From #Samarinda to #Balikpapan this event was one of toughest among all of the years. The vast amount of rain caused the rivers to swell and run fast. Some of the #rivercrossings saw the banks collapse as the convoy was constructing the bridge.

Most notable from this year was the helicopter airlift used to transport the #LandRover 90’s to continue the trek. See my earlier 🐪🏆 posts about this for more details.

Also for this year, the #TeamSpiritAward was introduced. Over the years, this became the most coveted award among the #cameleers. Only the team members were allowed to cast votes, and select the team that encompassed the true fellowship and camaraderie of the event. The team from #Brazil, Carlos Probst & Tito Rosenberg, (who were the country’s first team) won the award.

First subassembly of the @lego #Defender #technic build is the front #differential. I had a good chuckle when I first saw the u-joints in the kit, and knew this was going to be a fun build!

The original 1980 🐪🏆 ended in #Santarem #Brazil. So for the event’s 5th anniversary, it started there and ended in #Manaus as it followed the #TransAmazonicaHighway.

In a very wet year, even for a #rainforest, the convoy had to make treacherous #rivercrossings three separate times. Some of the river banks collapsed as the teams were building bridges to get their #LandRover 110’s across swollen rivers with gaps at least 30’ wide.

Departing from the #RangeRoverClassic used for the previous two years, this event was the only time the #Series3 88” vehicles were used. The support team drove the longer Series 3 109” vehicles.
.
With an ever increasing number of teams participating, the organizers decided to drop the dual team format, and opt for a single team of two to represent their countries.
.
This was also the year of the famous vehicle fire that started when the Italian journalists knocked over an oil stove and the flames engulfed their 109. This was the only vehicle to not make it across the finish line.
.
The route took them from #kinshasa to #kisangani withs temps getting upwards of 118*F (48*C) and humidity reaching 95%!

What do you use to keep the springs from falling out when reaching max articulation? There are a few options out there; dislocation cones allow for more travel as the spring is only locked into place at the bottom. Limit straps (which I use up front) are great, but you need strong mounting points and clearance. In a pinch I’ve seen zip ties and hose clamps used to great effect.

For the rear of my #Discovery2 I opted to use spring retainers. These clamp the spring at the top and bottom against the perches.
.
Whatever you use, don’t let the shocks fully extend and carry the weight of the axle. They aren’t designed for that load and can cause internal damage to the seals and valves.

This year was the first time teams were selected from around the world. Each participating country had two teams, with two members per team.

The 🇺🇸 teams were Ken Arnold & Bob Peters, and Rob Comstock & Paul Haven. Other participating countries were Germany, Italy, and Holland.

Another first for this year was the start of the #SpecialTasks. Although they were fairly limited in scope compared to what they would become in the later years.
.
And lastly, due to the outstanding performance of the #RangeRover in the 1981 🐪🏆, a partnership with #LandRover began that would last almost 20 years.
